Job Overview

An insurance underwriter is responsible for evaluating and assessing the risk associated with insuring individuals or businesses. They analyze insurance applications, determine coverage amounts, and set premiums based on factors such as the applicant's health, age, and occupation. Duties & Responsibilities

  • Evaluate insurance applications and determine coverage levels and premiums
  • Analyze risk factors and make decisions on whether to approve or deny insurance policies
  • Review and assess policy renewals and make adjustments as needed
  • Collaborate with insurance agents and brokers to gather additional information or clarify details
  • Stay uptodate on industry trends and regulations to ensure compliance
  • Communicate with policyholders to explain coverage options and answer any questions
  • Monitor and evaluate the performance of existing policies to identify potential risks or opportunities for improvement
  • Prepare reports and documentation to support underwriting decisions and recommendations

Education & Training

  • 1. Bachelor's degree in finance, business administration, or a related field
  • 2. Certification in underwriting, such as the Chartered Property Casualty Underwriter (CPCU) designation

Knowledge, Skills & Experience

  • Strong knowledge of insurance policies, regulations, and underwriting guidelines
  • Experience in analyzing risk factors and determining appropriate coverage levels
  • Excellent communication skills to interact with clients, brokers, and other stakeholders
  • Ability to make sound decisions based on thorough research and analysis
  • Proficiency in using underwriting software and other relevant tools
  • Familiarity with industry trends and market conditions
  • Experience in negotiating terms and conditions with clients
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to prioritize and manage workload efficiently
